What is Diarrhea in children?

Diarrhea is a body’s way or ridding itself from germs in which kids pass frequent, loose and watery stools from time to time. It is very common in babies and children. It usually doesn’t last for long time and doesn’t pose any serious threat to the kids. However, if it is very severe, you must consult your doctor. Ensure to keep your child hydrated by giving him plenty of fluids, an oral rehydration solution and breast milk (in case of infants).

What are the causes of Diarrhea in children?

Diarrhea is usually caused by gastrointestinal infections that are mainly due to:

  • Viruses
  • Bacteria
  • Parasite
  • Others reasons include:

  • Medications like laxatives or antibiotics
  • Ear infection
  • Too much juice
  • Food allergy

    What are the symptoms of Diarrhea?

    The symptoms of Diarrhea usually start with pain in abdomen and then it is followed by diarrhea. If diarrhea is caused by GI tract infections due to virus, bacteria or parasite then few more symptoms may be experienced by the child, such as:

  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Loss of weight
  • Dehydration
