Seizure

What is a Seizure?

A Seizure is a sudden surge in the brain’s electrical activity that happens due to chemical changes occurring in nerve cells. It occurs for a short duration of time and usually affects a person’s appearance. Most of the Seizures last for 30 seconds to 2 minutes and are harmless. In case it lasts for more than 5 minutes or if the person has many Seizures and he doesn’t wake up between then it is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment. A Seizure itself is not a disease but a symptom of brain problem.

What are the causes of Seizure?

There are various health conditions that can lead to seizure. Anything that affects the body has direct effect on the brain and it may cause seizure. The health conditions include:

  • Alcohol withdrawal
  • Bites or sting
  • Infection in brain
  • Congenital brain defect
  • Brain injury while child birth
  • Drug abuse or drug withdrawal
  • Electrolyte imbalance
  • Electric shock

What are the symptoms of Seizure?

One may experience few symptoms before Seizure actually occurs, that may include:

  • Change in vision

  • Trembling arms and legs

The symptoms one may experience when a seizure is in progress includes:

  • Loss of consciousness followed by confused state of mind
  • Uncontrolled muscle spasms
  • Drooling or frothing at mouth
  • Falling
  • Having strange taste in mouth
  • Clenching your teeth
  • Biting your tongue
  • Rapid eye movements
  • Making unusual noises like grunting
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Sudden mood swings
How can Seizures be treated?

Seizures can be treated by treating the underlying cause of the problem. This way one can prevent future seizures. Treatment for seizures due to epilepsy includes:

  • Medications
  • Surgery to correct brain abnormality
  • Nerve stimulation
  • Special diet
