What do you mean by Early Pregnancy Complications?

Some females experience complications during their first trimester i.e. first three months of pregnancy. These complications can be dangerous for the mother, fetus or both. Even women who were healthy before pregnancy can experience Early Pregnancy Complications. Therefore, it is important that you visit your medical specialist as soon as you see visible symptoms of these complications. Early treatment can help decrease the risk of problems and your condition can be managed before it becomes serious.

Some common complications that may occur in early pregnancy are:

  • Abortion – Bleeding may occur in early pregnancy without any serious impact and this may imply a miscarriage or further it may lead to spontaneous abortion. This is evident only by a scan. The reasons for abortion are always not known, however, it can be due to chromosomal abnormalities or physical problems with a woman’s reproductive system.
  • Ectopic pregnancy –There are times when the embryo places itself in the tube or ovary and not in the uterus. Here, the embryo can’t sustain itself and the gestational sac bursts & embryo dies. This is known as ectopic pregnancy and is a life-threatening condition if not treated in early stages. Hyperemesis Gravidarum – In this condition, the female has severe nausea and vomiting during her first trimester. She is not able to eat anything and becomes dehydrated. Intravenous fluids and medicines are recommended to reduce vomiting. The reasons for Hyperemesis Gravidarum are rapidly increasing blood level of a hormone called HCG.
What are the symptoms of Early Pregnancy Complications?

You must immediately rush to your doctor if you experience few symptoms in early pregnancy like:

  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Spotting
  • Cramps
  • Excessive nausea and vomiting
  • High fever
  • Vaginal discharge and itching
  • Pain or burning sensation during urination
  • Leg or calf pain/swelling on one side

It is important for a female with Early Pregnancy Complications to make a regular visit to the doctor as soon as pregnancy is detected. Problems arising in the initial stages can be treated there and then. Medications may help treat various complications.
