What is Ear Discharge?

Ear Discharge is any fluid that comes from the ear and it may be blood, ear wax or pus.

What are the causes of Ear Discharge?

Most of the times, the discharge from ear is wax that is actually the oil produced by the body naturally to protect dust, bacteria or other foreign bodies from entering the ear.

At times, the eardrum may get ruptured and cause white, slightly bloody or yellow discharge from the ear. It may be due to:

  • Ear infection
  • Trauma
  • Foreign body in ear
  • Middle ear infection
  • Otitis externa
  • Swimmer’s ear

 

How can Ear Discharge be treated?

The treatment for Ear Discharge depends on the underlying cause. Some of the conditions don’t require any treatment at all and they heal themselves. But some conditions may be treated via:

  • Pain relievers
  • Special paper patch applied to the tear in ear drum
  • Antibiotic ear drops
  • Surgery (in severe cases)
