Hematuria

What is Hematuria?

Hematuria is a medical condition in which there is presence of blood in person’s urine. There are mainly two types of Hematuria:

  • Gross Hematuria: When you can see the blood in your urine.
  • Microscopic Hematuria: When you can’t see the blood in your urine, yet it is visible under the microscope.
What are the causes of Hematuria?

There are many reasons for blood cells to leak into urine, namely:

  • Urinary tract infections
  • Kidney infections
  • Bladder/kidney stone
  • Enlarged prostate
  • Kidney diseases
  • Cancer Inherited disorders
  • Kidney injury
  • Vigorous exercise
  • Certain medications
What are the symptoms of Hematuria?

People with gross hematuria have pink, red or brown coloured urine. Even the presence of small amount of blood in urine can change its colour. Some people with blood clots in their urine may suffer from bladder pain or back pain.

How can Hematuria be treated?

If the underlying condition is not serious then the patient may not require any treatment at all.
