An Acute Subdural Hematoma is a clot of blood that develops between the surface of brain and its tough outer covering known as dura mater. It usually occurs when there is stretching and tearing of veins on the brain’s surface due to severe head injury. Acute Subdural Hematoma is the most dangerous one and you can see the symptoms almost immediately.

What are the causes of Acute Subdural Hematoma?

Acute Subdural Hematoma is usually caused by a head injury from a fall, motor vehicle accident or an assault. People with bleeding disorders or those who take blood thinners are more prone to develop Acute Subdural Hematoma.

An Acute Subdural Hematoma that is very small may not require surgery but those that are greater than 1cm at the thickest point need immediate surgical approach. Usually, an opening is created in the skull to remove the thick blood clot and reach bleeding sites.
